Thorsten hatte mir zu Weihnachten Karten für “Excalibur” in Oberhausen geschenkt. Da waren wir am Freitag. Wobei die Bezeichnung “Rock-Oper” einen erstmal auf die falsche Fährte führt. Denn die Musik war nur ein kleiner Teil des Erlebnisses. Neben einem philharmonischen Orchester und einer Rockband sorgten ein Erzähler, verschiedene Sänger, Akrobaten, eine Gruppe von Irish Tap-Tänzern, die Mittelalterband Corvus Corax, eine Gruppe von Schauspielern, ein ganzes Spektrum von Pyrotechnik und Multimedia-Show und nicht zuletzt zwei Pferde für bombastische Unterhaltung.

Ich war zugegebener Maßen schlecht vorbereitet, obwohl Thorsten mir zusammen mit dem Gutschein einen ganzen Packen Infomaterial überreicht hatte. So habe ich erst zum Schluss mitbekommen, wie viele große Namen Komponist/Producer Alan Simon auf der Bühne versammelt hat: Alan Parsons, Johnny Logan, Les Holroyd (Barclay James Harvest), John Helliwell (Supertramp), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) und Schauspieler Michael Mendl als Merlin. Zu meiner Schande muss ich gestehen, dass ich selbst Johnny Logan die ganze Zeit nicht erkannt habe, obwohl ich vor gefühlten 120 Jahren - zu einer Zeit in der man sein Taschengeld noch für Musikkassetten ausgab - mal eine Zeit lang Fan von ihm war.

Meine ganz persönlichen Highlights waren allerdings E-Gitarrist Patrick O’May, einfach weil er selbst so viel Spaß auf der Bühne hatte und sich das total auf mich übertragen hat, und die Luftakrobatin Simone Heitinga. Falls jemand noch die Möglichkeit hat, die letzte Vorstellung der Tournee in Deutschland am 26. Januar in Nürnberg zu sehen, sollte er sich das Spektakel auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen!

Thorsten invited me to “Excalibur - The Celtic Rock Opera” in Oberhausen as a Christmas present. The show took place on Friday and it was a really extraordinary event. The music was only one of many pieces in this “picture”. They had a small philharmonic orchestra on stage as well as a rock band and different classical and rock singers. In addition we got to see acrobats (with more impressive acts than your average circus), a group of Irish tap dancers, the medieval band Corvus Corax, a lot of fireworks, a multi-media-show and not to forget two horses on stage. So we enjoyed more than two hours of great entertainment.

My personal highlights, however, were Patrick O’May - because he had so much fun on stage and totally passed this enthusiasm onto the audience - and air acrobat Simone Haitinge. If anyone has the chance to see the next/last show in Nuremberg, Germany on 26. January, I highly recommand it!

Heute nachmittag haben wir uns im Kino den neuen Film mit Katherine Heigl angesehen. Nachdem ich mir den Trailer angesehen hatte, waren meine Erwartungen an den Film relativ gering. Ich war dann selber überrascht, wie häufig ich gelacht habe. Der Film nimmt wirklich jedes Klischee, dass es zwischen Männern und Frauen je gab, auf die Schippe. Sehr unterhaltsam.

Für diejenigen unter Euch, die den Film noch nicht gesehen haben, hier eine kurze Inhaltszusammenfassung: Die TV-Produzentin Abby (Katherine Heigl) hat kein Glück in der Liebe, glaubt aber immer noch fest daran, dass auch Männer zu aufrichtigen, tiefen Gefühlen fähig sind. Der neue Moderator von Abbys Show, Mike (Gerard Butler), hingegen behauptet das Gegenteil. Er ist überzeugt, dass für Männer letztlich nur die “äußeren Werte”zählen. Die beiden machen einen Deal: Mike wird Abby helfen, sich endlich den Mann ihrer Träume zu angeln. Wenn er Erfolg hat, darf er seinen Job behalten – ansonsten räumt er freiwillig das Feld.

This afternoon we went to the movies to watch “The Ugly Truth”. After watching the trailer, I didn’t expect much of the film. However, I was surprised how much I laughed out loud during these 90 minutes. The movie really makes fun of every single prejudice there is between men and women. A really entertaining movie.

For those of you who have not watched it yet, I’m enclosing a short summary of the plot: TV producer Abby (Katherine Heigl) has no luck when it comes to men and love. She still believes men are able to truly and deeply love a woman though. The new presenter of her TV show Mike (Gerard Butler), on the other hand believes that in the end men only appreciate the outside beauty of a woman. The two of them make a deal: Mike will help Abby to conquer the man of her dreams. If he is successful he will keep his job, if he isn’t he will leave the show without trouble.

Nur kurz zur Erinnerung: Am Samstag um 20:15 Uhr zeigt der Bayrischer Rundfunk die Verfilmung von “Erntedank”, dem zweiten Fall von Kommissar Kluftinger. Bei mir ist noch nicht ganz raus, ob ich Gelegenheit haben werde, mir die Sendung anzusehen. Ich hoffe doch, also drückt mir die Daumen!

The Bavarian TV channel will broadcast a film based on “Erntedank”, the second mystery crime novel in the Detective Kluftinger series on Saturday.

• Langsam finde ich die Diskussion um Ulla Schmidts Dienstwagen Debakel ziemlich ermüdend. Ich weiß auch nicht, was Frau Schmidt und die Medien da noch großartig aufklären möchten. Rein rechtlich betrachtet hat sie sich nichts zu Schulden kommen lassen. Mal abgesehen davon finde ich es allerdings beängstigend, dass jemand, der diesen absolut unverhätnismäßigen Aufwand auch noch als “sehr wirtschaftliche” Handlung preist, im Gesundheitssystem Milliarden von Euro bewegen darf.
• Vergangene Woche hatte ich noch “Winterschwestern” von Amanda Eyre Ward gelesen. Ich fand den Roman so unprickelnd, dass ich ausnahmsweise auf eine ausführliche Rezension verzichte. Jetzt lese ich “Urlaub mit Papa” von Dora Heldt - also den Vorgänger zu “Tante Inge haut ab” - zum zweiten Mal und habe richtig Spaß dabei. Die beiden Bücher muss ich Euch unbedingt demnächst mal ausführlicher vorstellen.
• Gestern abend wurde ich gezwungen “Giulia in Love” zu gucken. Der Fremdschämfaktor bei dieser Sendung liegt bei gefühlten 35 Punkten auf einer Skala von 1 bis 10. Als Giulia bei der Verabschiedung von Benjamin in Tränen ausbrach und ihr “verstoßenes Kind” beklagte, musst ich mich fast übergeben. Memo an mich: Für kommenden Donnerstagabend unbedingt ein Ablenkmanöver überlegen.
• Hat zufällig jemand von Euch schon den “Fengshui-Detektiv” von Nury Vittachi gelesen? Ist dieses Buch zu empfehlen?

• During the past week a political “scandal” was the dominant topic in the media and I’m getting kind of tired of hearing about it. Ulla Schmidt, our health care minister, went to Spain for her summer vacation. Apparently she flew there while she asked her driver (and his son) to drive her business car all the way down there and then stay there for the duration of her vacation. Apparently this was necessary because she attended two official appointments there (one with the mayor of a neighbouring village and one with a group of Germans who live in the area). This cost the tax payer approximately 10.000 Euro and it only came out, because the Mercedes was stolen during the vacation. According to the business car directive going on vacation with your business car and your driver is totally legal. However, I think it is pretty scary to have someone who finds this “very economic” moving Billions of Euro around in the health care system.
• Last week I finished reading “Wintersisters” by Amanda Eyre Ward. However, the novel was not that inspiring, so I decided I will not write a review on it. Now I am reading “Urlaub mit Papa” (”Going on vacations with Dad”) by Dora Heldt for a second time and it’s really enjoyable.
• Yesterday I was forced to watch “Giulia in Love” - which is kind of like the “Bachelorette” with the Bachelorette being a German C-class celebrity. I was totally mortified on Giulia’s behalf during about 95 percent of the airtime. At the point where she had to say goodbye to the leaving candidate Benjamin she was crying and saying she felt like she was mourning a child she had banished I was close to throwing up. Note to myself: Think up a red herring strategy for next Thursday night!
• Did anyone already read the “Feng Shui Detective” by Nury Vittachi? Can you recommend this novel?

Anna Gavalda: Zusammen ist man weniger allein

On Wednesday the Bavarian TV station (BR3) will broadcast a film based on Anna Gavaldas “Ensemble c’est tout”. Unfortunately I could not figure out the title of the English translation of the novel - if there even is one at all. I added a link to a website which offers a literary tv guide each week, but it’s all in German and for German TV stations…

Am Wochenende ging’s gemeinsam mit einem befreundeten Pärchen zu “Tanz der Vampire” in Oberhausen. Die Inszenierung hat mir gut gefallen, die Kulisse fand ich toll. Nur das Publikum ist leider so gar nicht mitgegangen. Kein einziges Mal hat jemand mitgeklatscht, spontaner Applaus kam nur an wenigen Stellen und eher verhalten. Woran’s gelegen hat, kann ich nicht sagen. Doch während es mich in der ersten halben Stunde noch irritiert hat, wurde ich dann irgendwann auch von dieser allgemeinen “Wir lassen uns dann mal berieseln”-Stimmung eingelullt. Am Schluss hat es mich auch nicht mehr wirklich gewundert, dass es keine Zugabe gab. Wirklich schade!

At the weekend we went to see the musical “Dance of the Vampires” in Oberhausen. I really liked the production. However, for some reason the audience was not very enthusiastic. They did not clap in rythm to the music and the only very rarely applauded spontaneously during the scenes. I really can’t say what was the matter. And while I was irritated by this lack of enthusiasm during the first half an hour, I started to get lulled into this general apathy myself after a while. In the end I wasn’t surprised they didn’t perform an encore, but thought it was so sad anyway.
