Im Urlaub habe ich mein zweites Strickstück fertiggestellt, das ich Euch natürlich nicht vorenthalten möchte. Seit gestern abend stricke ich an einem weiteren Schal, diesmal mit rechten und linken Maschen im Wechsel, was meine Konzentration schon sehr fordert. Der pinke Schal war eigentlich für eine meiner Schwestern gedacht, allerdings stellte sich dann heraus, dass sie “keine Mädchen-Farben trägt”. Tja, es entgeht einem so einiges, wenn man nicht mehr zusammen wohnt.
Heute morgen beim Frühstücksfernsehen habe ich übrigens überlegt, ob ich eine Blogwette ausschreiben sollte, dass die Koalitionsverhandlungen darauf hinauslaufen werden, dass es keine in irgendeiner Art und Weise signifikanten

Änderungen im Steuersystem geben wird, die FDP den Koalitionsvertrag aber trotzdem unterschreibt. Allerdings wäre es wohl schwierig, jemanden zu finden, der dagegen wettet. Deshalb wäre die spannendere Frage wohl, wie lange CDU und FDP die Scharade “Wir tun alles, um da noch Spielräume zu finden” noch aufrecht erhält. Ich würde wetten, dass sie Ende kommender Woche langsam damit rausrücken werden, dass sich nix ändern wird (außer vielleicht, dass an einigen Stellen noch mehr gespart wird als eh schon).
Richtig gefreut habe ich mich heute, als ein Kunde anrief und einen Text ausführlich lobte. Da zeigt sich mal wieder, dass ich unter Druck (vor dem Urlaub musste noch so einiges fertig werden) zu Hochformen auflaufe.

I have posted a picture of my second piece of knitting, which I finished during my vacation last week. I originally made this for one of my sisters. However, in the meantime I found out she “doesn’t wear girly colours”. It’s amazing what you miss when you don’t live together anymore.
Today during breakfast TV I shortly considered to start a blog bet, that the negotiations of the coalition parties of the new government will end up bringing no changes whatsoever in the tax system but that the liberal party (FDP) will sign the coalition treaty anyway. However, I guess it would be hard to find anyone willing to bet against this. The more interesting question will be to see, how long they will carry on to pretend they are seriously searching for the financial scope to make these changes happen (as we all know by now they are just not there no matter what way you look at it). My bet is, that they will start at the end of next week to come out bit by bit with the fact that they wont change anything except perhaps to cut down the budgets even more than before).
Something that made me really happy this mornig was the call of a client who really praised one of my texts. This seems to prove once more that I work best under pressure (there were sooo many things to finish during the week before the vacation…).
Ich habe den Vormittag damit verbracht, mich mit 16 verschiedenen Vorzimmerdamen und Anrufbeantwortern zu unterhalten. Viel getan, wenig erreicht. Sowas macht mich immer ganz kribbelig. Hoffentlich wird’s heute nachmittag ein bisschen erquicklicher.
Mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich in den letzten Tagen kaum noch bei Spiegel-Online vorbeigeschaut habe, obwohl ich sonst ein regelrechter Spiegel-Online-Junkie bin. Das liegt allerdings mit Sicherheit nicht an dem Nachrichtenportal sondern an der unglücklichen Nachrichtenlage zurzeit. Das wurde mir heute morgen bewusst, als während des Frühstücks das “Morgenmagazin” nebenher lief. Diese ganze Diskussion um “die Falschaussage” von Verteidigungsminister Jung geht total an der Realität vorbei. Eigentlich müsste sich die Debatte darum drehen, ob ein Luftangriff als Antwort auf einen “Autoklau” (auch wenn zwei Tanklastzüge natürlich brisanter sind als durchschnittliche Familienkutschen) nicht eine unverhältnismäßige Maßnahme sind. Hier wäre die Forderung nach Aufklärung der Hintergründe aus meiner Sicht viel angebrachter. Und dann mein ganz persönliches Grusel-Highlight heute: Nach ungefähr einem Jahr Endlosverhandlungen um Opel, hat sich jetzt mal jemand die Mühe gemacht, die tatsächlichen Sanierungskosten zu errechnen. Der Laie staunt der Fachmann lacht (wahrscheinlich).
Am Samstag ist mir der neue Kluftinger-Krimi ins Haus geflattert. Ich hab’ ihn noch nicht ganz durch, aber er ist grandios! Dazu schreibe ich Euch noch eine ausführliche Kritik, sobald ich das Buch ausgelesen habe.

This morning I spoke to about 16 secretaries and answering machines. I spent loads of time on the phone trying to research a story without getting anywhere. Now I’m kind of frustrated, but there’s always the afternoon I guess.
Today I noticed that I don’t spend as much time on my favourite news site (spiegel.de) these days as I usually do. This has nothing to do with the quality of the site. It’s due to the unpleasent breaking news stories at the moment. For days on end there has been a heated discussion because our minister of defense said there were no civilian victims from the air raid which was conducted under German command in Afghanistan on Thursday. Debating about whether he said the truth in his first media statement or not seems totally irrelevant to me. The point that should be the center of the debate is whether an air raid is an adequate response to stealing two road tankers. I would rather want the media to investigate how this could happen than to spend their time and energy on the question whether the minister of defense embellished the truth because we are in the middle of the campaigns for the national elections. However, the most spine-chilling news today was, that after one year of negotiations about selling Opel someone finally took it upon them to calculate the actual cost of restructuring Opel.
On Saturday the new “Kluftinger” mystery crime novel arrived. I didn’t finish it yet, but so far it’s great! I will tell you more as soon as I know who the murderer is.
Heute ist ein verrückter Tag. Morgens habe ich eine sehr positive Nachricht erhalten, außerdem informierte mich amazon darüber, dass der neue Klufti-Krimi nun schon ein paar Tage früher versendet wird als geplant. Danach war ich so aufgedreht, dass ich mich aus Versehen die Treppe runter und dem DHL-Boten vor die Füße geworfen habe. Außer ein paar Schrammen an der linken Hand ist aber glücklicherweise nichts passiert. Sämtliche Ansprechpartner, die ich derweil dienstlich telefonisch erreichen möchte, sind wie vom Erdboden verschluckt. Man könnte fast meinen, heute sei irgendein nur mir unbekannter Feiertag.
Was den Wahlkampf angeht, habe ich mich ja mittlerweile damit abgefunden, dass die meisten Kampagnen völlig inhaltsleer ablaufen und nur noch versuchen, den Wähler auf irgendeine Art und Weise auf der emotionalen Ebene anzusprechen. Das ist bei einem Kopfmenschen wie mir sehr schwierig, das gebe ich gerne zu. Aber rechtfertigt das, dass wir uns abends zur besten Sendezeit mit Trash wie diesem Werbespot der Familien-Partei belästigen lassen müssen?

Today is a crazy day. This morning I got a very positive message I was really excited about. In addition I recieved an e-mail from amazon that the new “Kluftinger”-mystery crime novel will be shipped to me a few days earlier than planned. After that I was so excited and wound up I coincidentally threw myself down the stairs and right in front of the DHL delivery guy’s feet. Fortunately this only caused a small wound on my left hand. For some reason all the people I need to speak to job wise seem to have vanished from the face of this earth. I am starting to wonder whether there is some holiday here and I am the only one who doesn’t know about it.
We are in the middle of election campaigns for the national elections at the end of September here in Germany. I finally made my peace with the fact that the campaigns are totally free of any factual content/clear positions. All parties seem to have agreed to reach out for the voter solely on an emotional level - which is hard I admit with a person mainly driven by rational decisions like myself. But still this is no excuse to harrass us with trashy TV-spots like the one above during prime time! This is the campaign “Save the children” by the so called “Family Party”. The captions only say things like “Save the children. Save the pensioneers. Save us all.” Beyond that their is no real content.
“Der Spiegel”, Germany’s leading weekly political magazine, published a report on modern slavery in Germany in it’s online edition. It’s a story about Chinese chefs who come to work in Asia restaurants in Germany. So called agencies recruit them in China, ask them for a huge sum of money to find them a job in Germany and assist them in getting a visa (highly qualified Chinese chefs are allowed to stay in Germany for up to four years). As soon as they arrive in Germany their employer takes their passport away from them. In many cases the chefs agreed in a secret contract to waive around 1,500 Euro off their first salaries to their employers to make sure they stay with the company. In addition they are not payed the agreed (avarage) salary of around 1,200 Euros before taxes but 680 Euros or even less while they are working up to 90 hours a week instead of the 39 allowed by the union tarrifs. I always suspected that working conditions in many Asian restaurants in Germany were not that great, but I was shocked to find out how bad they really seem to be.
Die Bundestagswahl rückt mit großen Schritten näher. Und spätestens, seit gestern das Tohuwabohu um Wirtschaftsminister zu Guttenberg und seinen Auftrag an die Kanzlei Linklaters losgebrochen ist, bekommen wir den Wahlkampf mit voller Breitseite zu spüren. Aus meiner Sicht war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis eine Schlammschlacht um zu Guttenberg entbrennen würde. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Politikern hat er in den vergangenen Monaten und angesichts der enormen Herausforderungen der Wirtschaftskrise konsequent Kompetenz und Umsichtigkeit bewiesen.
Auch die Entscheidung, die Gesetzesvorlage (nicht das Gesetz, das machen in Deutschland immer noch Bundestag und Bundesrat!) von externen Beratern erstellen zu lassen, halte ich für eine kompetente und umsichtige Entscheidung. Bei der Übernahme maroder Banken durch den Staat geht es um enorme Geldbeträge, da sollte man sich schon hochspezialisierte Experten leisten, um sich bestmöglich rechtlich abzusichern. Alles andere wäre aus meiner Sicht unverantwortlich. Es geht ja auch niemand zu einem Anwalt für Patentrecht, um seinen Ehevertrag aufzusetzen.
Ich fände es jedenfalls sinnvoll, lieber endlich Sachthemen in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Wenn das so weitergeht, weiß ich bis zur Wahl immer noch nicht, für welche Positionen die einzelnen Parteien eigentlich stehen. Ich warte schon ungeduldig darauf, dass der Wahl-O-Mat online geht, damit ich wenigstens zu ein paar grundlegenden Themen die Positionen der Parteien vergleichen kann.
Bei Wikipedia habe ich übrigens eine Zusammenstellung der Parteien gefunden, die letztendlich zur Wahl stehen. Ich habe bewusst nicht auf die Websites der Parteien verlinkt, denn einige der dort vertretenen Ideologien finde ich einfach zu befremdlich. Wen’s interessiert, der kann ja über den Wikipedia-Link zu den Parteien weitersurfen.

On 27 September national elections will be held in Germany. During the past few days the election campaigns entered into the hot phase. However, so far the parties didn’t use the opportunity to clarify their positions and their aims for the next four years. Instead we are witnessing one made up scandal after the other. First was minister of health Ulla Schmidt and her stolen business car. Now the Social Democratic Party is hitting back by insinuating that minister of economics Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg wasted the tax payers money by asking the law firm Linklaters to write up a draft for the laws regulating the take-over of bankrupt banks by the state. I think it is even his duty to ensure that the best, highly specialised experts work on a law that can have such enormous financial consequences for the state (= us all) and which is a first time ever scenario in the history of our country. However, we now have a debate going on whether commercial law firms should be allowed to write state laws - which is totally ridiculous, as they only worked out a draft which then had to pass through the Bundestag and the Bundesrat (the two chambers of parliament). I really hope the election campaigns return to rational information soon, otherwise I will still have no idea what the different parties’ stands are at the day of the election. For the German readers I added a list of the parties which have been approved for the national elections a few days ago.
Langsam finde ich die Diskussion um Ulla Schmidts Dienstwagen Debakel ziemlich ermüdend. Ich weiß auch nicht, was Frau Schmidt und die Medien da noch großartig aufklären möchten. Rein rechtlich betrachtet hat sie sich nichts zu Schulden kommen lassen. Mal abgesehen davon finde ich es allerdings beängstigend, dass jemand, der diesen absolut unverhätnismäßigen Aufwand auch noch als “sehr wirtschaftliche” Handlung preist, im Gesundheitssystem Milliarden von Euro bewegen darf.
Vergangene Woche hatte ich noch “Winterschwestern” von Amanda Eyre Ward gelesen. Ich fand den Roman so unprickelnd, dass ich ausnahmsweise auf eine ausführliche Rezension verzichte. Jetzt lese ich “Urlaub mit Papa” von Dora Heldt - also den Vorgänger zu “Tante Inge haut ab” - zum zweiten Mal und habe richtig Spaß dabei. Die beiden Bücher muss ich Euch unbedingt demnächst mal ausführlicher vorstellen.
Gestern abend wurde ich gezwungen “Giulia in Love” zu gucken. Der Fremdschämfaktor bei dieser Sendung liegt bei gefühlten 35 Punkten auf einer Skala von 1 bis 10. Als Giulia bei der Verabschiedung von Benjamin in Tränen ausbrach und ihr “verstoßenes Kind” beklagte, musst ich mich fast übergeben. Memo an mich: Für kommenden Donnerstagabend unbedingt ein Ablenkmanöver überlegen.
Hat zufällig jemand von Euch schon den “Fengshui-Detektiv” von Nury Vittachi gelesen? Ist dieses Buch zu empfehlen?

During the past week a political “scandal” was the dominant topic in the media and I’m getting kind of tired of hearing about it. Ulla Schmidt, our health care minister, went to Spain for her summer vacation. Apparently she flew there while she asked her driver (and his son) to drive her business car all the way down there and then stay there for the duration of her vacation. Apparently this was necessary because she attended two official appointments there (one with the mayor of a neighbouring village and one with a group of Germans who live in the area). This cost the tax payer approximately 10.000 Euro and it only came out, because the Mercedes was stolen during the vacation. According to the business car directive going on vacation with your business car and your driver is totally legal. However, I think it is pretty scary to have someone who finds this “very economic” moving Billions of Euro around in the health care system.
Last week I finished reading “Wintersisters” by Amanda Eyre Ward. However, the novel was not that inspiring, so I decided I will not write a review on it. Now I am reading “Urlaub mit Papa” (”Going on vacations with Dad”) by Dora Heldt for a second time and it’s really enjoyable.
Yesterday I was forced to watch “Giulia in Love” - which is kind of like the “Bachelorette” with the Bachelorette being a German C-class celebrity. I was totally mortified on Giulia’s behalf during about 95 percent of the airtime. At the point where she had to say goodbye to the leaving candidate Benjamin she was crying and saying she felt like she was mourning a child she had banished I was close to throwing up. Note to myself: Think up a red herring strategy for next Thursday night!
Did anyone already read the “Feng Shui Detective” by Nury Vittachi? Can you recommend this novel?
