Nächste Woche Dienstag beginnt die LogiMAT - eine der wichtigsten deutschen Messen im Bereich Logistik und Materialfluss. Für mich ist diese Messe beruflich immer das Highlight des Jahres, auch wenn die Tage davor meist sehr hektisch sind. Trotzdem bin ich inzwischen beim zweiten Krimi von Nicola Förg angelangt, ein paar Seiten abends vor dem Einschlafen müssen einfach immer sein, manchmal schaffe ich auch ein paar Seiten in der Mittagspause. Ich hoffe, ich finde nächste Woche (nach der Messe) endlich die Ruhe, Euch die beiden Krimis etwas ausführlicher vorzustellen.

The LogiMAT trade show starts next week - this is one of the most important German business events in the world of logistics and materials flow. For me this trade show has been the highlight of the business year ever since I started working in public relations in 2004. The days before the trade fair are always a bit hectic. However, in spite of that I got through the first mystery crime novel by Nicola Förg a few days ago and I am now half way though the second novel by her I bought. As soon as the trade show is over next week I will hopefully have the peace and quiet to give you a more detailed description of these two books.

In den letzten Wochen habe ich ziemlich viel an meiner geschäftlichen Online-Präsenz herumgewerkelt. Außer der Website meines Redaktionsbüros ist nun noch die Themenwebsite www.pressemitteilung-zur-messe.de entstanden. Dafür suche ich aktuell noch erste Referenzkunden. Falls Ihr also jemanden kennt, der in den nächsten Monaten Aussteller auf einer Messe ist, wäre es super, wenn Ihr den Link weitergeben würdet. During the past few weeks I worked a lot on promoting my business on-line. Ich bin vor ein paar Stunden schon in die neue Arbeitswoche gerutscht. Seit Anfang September habe ich so viel zu tun, dass ich vergangene Woche und diese Woche den Sonntagnachmittag zum Arbeitstag erklärt habe. Ich will mich gar nicht beklagen, ich habe lieber zu viel zu tun als zu wenig. Ein bisschen schade finde ich es aber schon, dass das Wochenende deshalb noch kürzer ausgefallen ist. Freitagabend habe ich nach langer Zeit meine beiden Schwestern mal wieder getroffen. Es ist schon verrückt, wie unterschiedlich Geschwister so sind. Meine Schwestern zieht es immer in die Ferne: Die eine lebt in Wien und kam gerade aus Tansania zurück, die andere lebt in den Niederlanden und hat ihren Sommerurlaub in Kolumbien verbracht. Ich hingegen habe mein Herz an Südengland und Irland verloren und könnte glücklich und zufrieden die nächsten 15 Jahre dort meinen Urlaub verbringen. Samstag waren wir dann in verschiedenen Baumärkten unterwegs, um Konsolen für Bücherregale zu besorgen, die wir über den Schreibtischen aufhängen wollen. Obwohl ich eine ganze Menge Bücher über Buchticket oder an Familie und Freunde weitergebe, sammeln sich doch immer mehr an… Wir wollten unbedingt Messing farbene haben, weil die am besten zum Holz passen, aber irgendwie scheint Messing außer Mode gekommen zu sein, wir sind erst im dritten Baumarkt fündig geworden. Heute stand dann mal wieder Tanzschule auf dem Programm. Es lief zur Abwechslung mal richtig gut - vor allem weil ich ausnahmsweise mal nicht alle neuen Figuren wieder vergessen hatte. Auf dem Rückweg haben wir dann festgestellt, dass es jetzt anfängt so richtig Spaß zu machen, weil wir jetzt zu jedem Tanz ein paar Figuren aus dem Effeff beherrschen.

A few hours ago I already started into the new working week. Since the beginning of September there is so much to do, I started working Sunday afternoons last week. I’m not complaining or anything. I like it better when I have too much to do than when I don’t have enough to do to fill the (work) days. I regret a bit that the weekends have become even shorter than they are anyway. On Friday I met my two sisters who I had not seen in a long while. It always amazes me how different we all turned out to be. My sisters are somehow always yearning for far aways countries. One of them lives in Vienna and just returned from two months in Tanzania. The other one lives in the Netherlands and spent her summer vacation in Columbia. I on the other hand fell in love with South England and Ireland a long time ago and could happily spent my vacations there for the next 15 years. Saturday we went to several DIY markets. We were looking for cantilevers to put bookshelves up above our desks. We had set our hearts on brass cantilevers. However they seem to have gone out of style, so we only found them in the third DIY market we went to. Today we had our dancing class again. For once we did really well, mostly because I hadn’t forgotten all the new figures we learned the week before. On our way back home we decided that now the lessons were starting to be real fun, because we finally know some figures by heart for each dance.

• Ich habe den Vormittag damit verbracht, mich mit 16 verschiedenen Vorzimmerdamen und Anrufbeantwortern zu unterhalten. Viel getan, wenig erreicht. Sowas macht mich immer ganz kribbelig. Hoffentlich wird’s heute nachmittag ein bisschen erquicklicher.
• Mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich in den letzten Tagen kaum noch bei Spiegel-Online vorbeigeschaut habe, obwohl ich sonst ein regelrechter Spiegel-Online-Junkie bin. Das liegt allerdings mit Sicherheit nicht an dem Nachrichtenportal sondern an der unglücklichen Nachrichtenlage zurzeit. Das wurde mir heute morgen bewusst, als während des Frühstücks das “Morgenmagazin” nebenher lief. Diese ganze Diskussion um “die Falschaussage” von Verteidigungsminister Jung geht total an der Realität vorbei. Eigentlich müsste sich die Debatte darum drehen, ob ein Luftangriff als Antwort auf einen “Autoklau” (auch wenn zwei Tanklastzüge natürlich brisanter sind als durchschnittliche Familienkutschen) nicht eine unverhältnismäßige Maßnahme sind. Hier wäre die Forderung nach Aufklärung der Hintergründe aus meiner Sicht viel angebrachter. Und dann mein ganz persönliches Grusel-Highlight heute: Nach ungefähr einem Jahr Endlosverhandlungen um Opel, hat sich jetzt mal jemand die Mühe gemacht, die tatsächlichen Sanierungskosten zu errechnen. Der Laie staunt der Fachmann lacht (wahrscheinlich).
• Am Samstag ist mir der neue Kluftinger-Krimi ins Haus geflattert. Ich hab’ ihn noch nicht ganz durch, aber er ist grandios! Dazu schreibe ich Euch noch eine ausführliche Kritik, sobald ich das Buch ausgelesen habe.

• This morning I spoke to about 16 secretaries and answering machines. I spent loads of time on the phone trying to research a story without getting anywhere. Now I’m kind of frustrated, but there’s always the afternoon I guess.
• Today I noticed that I don’t spend as much time on my favourite news site (spiegel.de) these days as I usually do. This has nothing to do with the quality of the site. It’s due to the unpleasent breaking news stories at the moment. For days on end there has been a heated discussion because our minister of defense said there were no civilian victims from the air raid which was conducted under German command in Afghanistan on Thursday. Debating about whether he said the truth in his first media statement or not seems totally irrelevant to me. The point that should be the center of the debate is whether an air raid is an adequate response to stealing two road tankers. I would rather want the media to investigate how this could happen than to spend their time and energy on the question whether the minister of defense embellished the truth because we are in the middle of the campaigns for the national elections. However, the most spine-chilling news today was, that after one year of negotiations about selling Opel someone finally took it upon them to calculate the actual cost of restructuring Opel.
• On Saturday the new “Kluftinger” mystery crime novel arrived. I didn’t finish it yet, but so far it’s great! I will tell you more as soon as I know who the murderer is.

Wirtschaftskrise und daraus resultierende Werbeflaute machen den Verlagen zu schaffen, das ist nichts Neues. Auch geht der Trend ja seit Jahren weg von den Printmedien und hin zu Online Content. Trotzdem war ich betroffen, als ich vor einigen Tagen erfuhr, dass die “Logistik inside” als eigener Titel eingestellt wurde. Fortan wird der Titel nach Angaben des Verlags Bestandteil der “Verkehrsrundschau” sein. Im ersten Moment konnte ich diese Nachricht kaum glauben, denn immerhin handelt es sich bei der “Logistik inside” um eines der vier wichtigsten Fachmedien im Bereich Logistik. Ich empfinde diesen Schritt als großen Verlust für diejenigen, die im Bereich Logistik tätig sind.

The global economic crisis and the effect it has on the spending on advertisements is a great problem for publishing houses. That’s not new. Also there has been a development away from printed titles and towards online content for years. Even though I knew all this it still shocked me when I was told that “Logistik inside” one of the four most important logistics trade magazine will no longer be published. Instead part of the content will be integrated in another trade journals appearing in the same publishing house. What an unfortunate loss for everyone working in the logistics sector!

Ich habe beschlossen, mir selber heute nachmittag hitzefrei zu geben. Jetzt rödel ich hier schon seit Stunden rum und komme nicht so recht von der Stelle, weil mein Hirn von der Hitze schon zu sehr eingelullt ist. Mein letztes terminkritisches Projekt, das diese Woche anstand, habe ich glücklicherweise gestern fertiggestellt. So muss ich kein allzu schlechtes Gewissen haben, wenn ich die für heute geplante Recherche auf Montag verschiebe. Ich hoffe, ihr müsst Euch bei den Temperaturen auch nicht mehr allzu lange quälen, bevor ihr das Wochenende einläuten dürft.

I decided to give myself the afternoon off. I have spent hours on the tiny little things I accomplished so far, because my brain seems to be fried by the heat. I finished my last job with a deadline for this week yesterday, so I don’t need to feel bad about not working this afternoon. I had some research planned for today, but I can easily do that on Monday instead. Hopefully you don’t have to suffer the heat that much longer at work either. Have a great weekend!
